How Family Tides began
A shore, a family, and a bucket of stones that was never supposed to become anything.
FAMILY PHOTO — the five of us on the beach
Nick and Alana met in Sea Isle City, New Jersey, more than twenty years ago. It was the kind of summer that stays in a family's language forever — the streets, the corner where they first talked, the way the light drops behind the dunes around eight.
Years later, we come back with three daughters. We walk the same beach. And somewhere along the way the walk became a collection: everyone with a pocket full of stones, everyone convinced their find was the best one.
We started washing them at the house, laying them out on a towel to dry, and choosing. Most go back. A few don't. Those are the ones that become jewelry.
Nothing here is mass-made. Every piece is one stone, chosen by hand, wrapped or set at our kitchen table. When it sells, it is gone — because the stone only existed once.
